News from Wheels in Ghana and Kosovo

In October 2007 Steering Wheels member Shirley Raymond recently led a team of ten people to Ghana, whilst at the same time Glenda Pike (Wheels for the World Coordinator) and Steering Wheels member Eileen Sutherland, went to Kosovo to explore possibilities of working with other organisations to enable disabled people to access the mobility aids they need.

Both groups text message reports are below:

Kosovo

  • Day 1 - Glenda and Eileen arrived safely in Kosovo. The flat where they are staying is ideal and in a good part of town.
  • Day 2 – All is going well. Visited the wheelchair workshop and spoke to the engineers who hadn’t been paid for a while. Eileen was interviewed on local TV. Please pray for wisdom in sorting out all the pieces of the jigsaw.
  • Day 3 - Visited a cemetery of 300 graves of local men - all from the same village who had been killed on the same day in April 1999. Flowers were on every grave - a sight never to be forgotten and so tragic.
  • Day 5 - Privileged to meet with some families off the beaten track and be welcomed into their homes. Some of the children were disabled with Cerebral Palsy.
  • Day 6 - The skies are blue but the air is cool. We have been staying in a flat in Kosovo and been hit by two power cuts and one water shortage. We have met many different people, travelling north to Ollen, South to Prizren and West to Djokovac.

Ghana

  • Day 1 – The team arrived safely and are looking forward to starting work tomorrow.
  • Day 2 – Pam spoke to a group of pastors on disability issues which was received with great interest. The rest of the team cleaned and sorted the wheelchairs.
  • Day 3 - 60 disabled people were provided with wheelchairs, although, as always, there were more needs than chairs.
  • Day 5 - 5 different churches were visited and were given input from team members on disability. Pastors that had received training by Pam were keen to keep the issue of disability on their agenda.
  • Day 6 - Today is a Bank Holiday but the rest of the week will be very busy seeing disabled people and fitting chairs, although there is a shortage of some of the larger chairs. Please pray that God will provide for those most in need and for the team.
