Free! — Ways to Welcome Disabled People
Christian disability charity Through the Roof are giving away their publications to anyone who needs them, to make sure that the inclusion of disabled people is not forgotten in the midst of the recession.
“As a charity Through the Roof has been seriously affected by the financial downturn,” said Jacky Oliver, CEO. “However, we do not want to be always asking for money. Whilst we are making our needs known, we feel strongly that we should also be counter-cultural and give something away for nothing. Our vision is for disabled people to be free to fulfil their God-given potential. We’re a small charity, and these resources cost us money to produce. We’re not giving them away because they’re worthless to us, but because we believe that including disabled people is too valuable to ignore.”
Between October and Christmas this year, Through the Roof will remove the charges on their own publications, providing them free to churches and groups who request them. These resources include good practice advice to welcome people with different needs; strategies to include disabled children; physical adaptations for buildings; and a self-assessment checklist to help you identify ways to fully include disabled people.
Through the Roof are often contacted by disabled people who cannot access a building, families with autistic children who are made to feel unwelcome, or individuals who are unable to join in a meeting when all that is needed is a hearing loop. Disability inclusion is not just about ramps and accessible toilets, important as these are. A little effort can make a big difference to the lives of disabled people and there are many inexpensive changes that can remove barriers to disabled people contributing fully in the life of our faith communities.
