Through the Roof in Northern Ireland

Through the Roof is represented in Northern Ireland by a committed group of volunteers who ensure that Through the Roof’s response to the needs of disabled people in Northern Ireland is appropriate, because much of the work is done within the Province. The team, some of whom are disabled people, is able to offer a wide variety of services to churches, clubs and other organisations all focused on making activities inclusive of disabled people.
Disability in Northern Ireland
There are 345,000 disabled people in the Province - how many do we see in our churches?
Wheels for the World in Northern Ireland
The Northern Ireland team has contributed substantially to Wheels for the World in a whole variety of different ways. The team has organised collection, storage, refurbishment and transportation of wheelchairs, including driving lorries to Eastern Europe from the Province.
Many of the current team members have participated in Wheels for the World trips and the team spearheaded a distribution in the Ukraine. As well as funding their trips, volunteers have also raised money for a wheelchair repair workshop in Kenya.
In recent years Northern Ireland has specialised in collecting paediatric wheelchairs and are always pleased to hear from anyone who has a child’s chair which is no longer needed - regardless of condition.
Links with Fleming Fulton School
Fleming Fulton School (a school in Belfast for physically disabled children and young people from nursery age to 19) has a special partnership with Through the Roof in Northern Ireland. The pupils and staff have a great interest and commitment to the work of Through the Roof and Wheels for the World. They have raised thousands of pounds and have collected paediatric wheelchairs for disabled children overseas. The children demonstrate that disabled children care about others less fortunate than they are and are happy to help them achieve the mobility they need. Carol Mills, a teacher at Fleming Fulton teachers has been on Wheels for the World trips to Albania and the Ukraine. Through the Roof NI team volunteers regularly visit the school to give presentations, lead workshops or participate in small group discussions
We would love to hear from you
Do contact us if you think we can help you in any way. We are trying to build up a picture of what is happening in Northern Ireland churches. So, if you have an example of good practice in your church, we would love to hear about it.
